‘Smart’ guns, dumb idea!

The Washington Post article on “smart guns” (firearms that won’t fire without electronic owner confirmation) mentions a gun control law in New Jersey passed in 2002. This “hotly contested” gun control legislation mandates a ban on “dumb guns” three years after a “smart gun” goes on sale in the U.S. That’s about to happen in California.

And so New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg has written a letter to N.J. Attorney General John Jay Hoffman asking him to start the doomsday clock for “dumb gun” sales. If he follows the letter of the law, Hoffman will ignite a firestorm of protest from already beleaguered N.J. gun owners.

New Jersey gun owners don’t want to lose access to, trade or face the confiscation of tried-and-true non-electronic firearms. They view electronic firearms as inherently unreliable. What if your finger’s covered with dirt or blood? What if the electronic “smart gun” runs out of power? What if you need to use someone else’s “smart gun” in an emergency?
